Faculty Governance Workshop
On January 15, 2025 AAUP-WC, Faculty, Council and the Associate Dean of Faculty hosted a workshop on Faculty Shared Governance.
We were joined by Michael DeCesare, Senior Program Officer for the AAUP national organization’s Department of Academic Freedom, Tenure, & Governance. His presentation and the Q&A that followed advanced our understandings of shared governance and how it should work in practice. Afterward, we convened in breakout groups to explore ways we could improve shared governance through our standing committee structure.
The main goals of the workshop include:
to provide explicit education about shared governance in higher education, including a brief history and current status of shared governance.
to empower our faculty with shared knowledge, language, and skills about our role in college governance.
to spend time discussing the work of key standing committees, to consider what is or isn’t working well (and why), and to develop concrete plans for strengthening our governance processes.
